Raquel Garcia-Tomás: the comedy of reality

Commissioning of works 04.03.2021

"I am a narcissist": this is the title of the opera that brought the young Catalan composer Raquel García-Tomás the National Music Prize in the category "composition" in 2020.
She is preparing her new opera Alexina B., with Irene Gayraud and Marta Pazos, which will have its world premiere in March 2023 at the Liceu in Barcelona. She will be the second woman to create an opera at the Liceu in 175 years!

The Mixtur Festival and Hémisphère have joined forces once again to commission a work, Sightings, which will be presented on October 7, 2022 in Barcelona.

Raquel García-Tomás, born in Barcelona, is a young composer specialising in interdisciplinary creation and holds a doctorate from the Royal College of Music in London.

In 2017, through the Prize "El ojo critico" of the Spanish Radio Television (RTVE), it is " the originality of his artistic approach combining the written language with the technological and audiovisual language" that is praised by the critics.

A combination that is particularly successful in "I am a narcissist", written by Helena Tornero and directed by Marta Pazos, presented at the Teatro Real in Madrid and then at the Teatro LLure in Barcelona in 2019.

In the last few years, these works have been created in the most important national and international venues, such as "DIDO Reloaded", produced by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, or "The Blue Whale", a reflection on sacrifice in contemporary society inspired by Igor Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring", written by Victoria Szpunberg and directed by Xavier Albertí in 2018.

His music has been performed in Barcelona, of course, at the Auditori, the Palau de la Música, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya; in Spain at the Palau de la Música de València, the Auditorio de Zaragoza, the Teatro del Canal or the Auditorio 400 of the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid. But also far beyond in Berlín, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Stockholm, Viena, Lisbon, Cairo or Buenos Aires and in France in Orleans and Lyon.

Her most notable projects have been in London, where she lived for six years, in collaboration with the English National Ballet, the Royal British Society of Sculptors and the Royal Academy of Arts.

Today she is composing a new opera commissioned by the Liceu Opera House in Barcelona: Alexina B. The original libretto is written by the French author and poet Irene Gayraud and will be directed again by Marta Pazos and presented on March 18, 21 and 22, 2023.

In the meantime, we will have the pleasure to discover SightingsSightings, co-written with the video artist Pere Ginard, and performed by the young German ensemble Via Nova, on October 7, 2022 at 8 pm at the Fabra i Coats during the new edition of the Mixtur festival.
Sightings was previewed on September 5 at the Kunstfest in Weimar.
